John R. Mars, 92, of Florida, formerly of Culver, IN, passed away on
Friday, August 26, 2011 in Orlando, Florida.
John was born on January 20, 1919 to John and Eugenia (Ferrari)
Marsolini in Milton, Massachusetts. After graduating from MIlton HIgh
School, he went on to earn Masters Degrees in Teaching and Foreign
Languages from Brown University and Harvard University. On June 25,
1944 he was married to Phyllis Lavelli. Together they raised 2 sons.
He was a former teacher and Superintendent at the Culver Military
Academy, a member of Collins-Tasch American Legion Post 399 of
Monterey, and attended the Prince of Peace Catholic Church in Sun City
Center, Florida.
John is survived by his sons Anthony C. Mars and Dr. J. Peter Mars. He
was preceded in death by his parents and his wife Phyllis Mars.
Father Jeff Largent will officiate a Mass of Christian Burial at the Culver
Academy Chapel, Culver, IN on Thursday, September 1, 2011 at
11:00am EDT. Burial will follow at the Culver Masonic Cemetery.
Memorials may be given in John's memory to St. Mary's of the Lake
Catholic Church, Culver or to the John R. and Phyllis Mars Scholarship
Fund in care of the Culver Academy.
